In a recent Federal Court Order, lawyers from around the country were selected to head up the many lawsuits filed in the U.S. involving bleeding deaths and injuries from the drug Xarelto.

The Court presiding over all the consolidated federal lawsuits related to Xarelto bleeding injurieshas appointed lead counsel for the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee. In Pretrial Order #7 signed by the Hon. Eldon E. Fallon, both  Brian H. Barr of the Levin Papantonio law firm and Andy D. Birchfield of the Beasley Allen law firm were appointed as co-lead counsel to head a core group of twelve law firms that will litigate the case on behalf of injured plaintiffs. Cases involving bleeding injuries suffered by patients taking the Xarelto blood thinning medication filed against Johnson & Johnson and Bayer were previously consolidated before Judge Fallon into one federal action known as MDL 2592. Defendants include three German-based Bayer entities – Bayer HealthCare AG, Bayer Pharma AG, and Bayer AG.

Asked for comment, lead attorney Brian Barr said, “We look forward to the formal discovery process to get to the truth. The PSC will be reviewing company documents and will be seeking to take depositions of company officials.” While the litigation process is already underway, Plaintiffs are still coming forward with claims of serious bleeding injuries and even deaths that occurred while on the Xarelto medication. “Our experience with litigating the Pradaxa lawsuits (also a blood thinner) will give us a good head start in the discovery process,” attorney Barr added. The Court overseeing the consolidated Xarelto lawsuits is located in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
